LTO ultrium specification first came into origin in the year 2000. The research
findings of IDC are that LTO taper format has almost 82 percent share in the
mid-range market. There are number vendors that are manufacturing LTO
cartridges including TDK, Dell, Sony, Imation, Maxell, Verbatim and Fujifilm.
AES-256 encryption has been added to the LTO 4 tape format’s specification. The
performance of LTO4 tape also has been improved.
The
LTO-3 tape drive operates at fast speed of 80MB/sec which has been enhanced up
to 120 MB/s in the LTO4
tape drives. LTO4 tape cartridge can store double the amount of data which
can be recorded in a LTO3 ultrium cartridge. LTO4 tape format has the
capability to support compressed capacity of 800 gigabytes. This means that
data equal to 300 DVD movies can be stored on LTO-4 tape cartridge. If you want
to make further comparison, the collections of Library of Congress can be
recorded on six data cartridges of LTO4. LTO 4 tape is the smartest and most
economical choice as it also supports the advantageous feature of write-once
read-many. WORM capability has been employed in both the third and fourth
generation ultrium tapes. Hardware based encryption has been included in the HP
LTO-4 1840 tape drive that increases the security level.
The
1840 LTO4 Tape drive
by Hewlett-Packard is very powerful and robust that is capable of recording
data of 1.6 terabytes per LTO4 tape cartridge. Hardware based encryption has
been included in the HP LTO-4 tape drive that increases the security level
along with unparalleled durability and efficiency which is the demand of the
enterprise customers. 1840 tape drive is the first tape drive by HP that has
the technology to store 1.6 TB data per cartridge in compressed mode. Powerful
architecture and design of HP 1840 ultrium drive ensures unprecedented
performance and robustness. Encryption technology is an added feature of LTO4
tape drive which lessens the worries of data managers and companies in case of
data loss or theft. Because the encrypted data will be of no use to any one, in
this way the companies can protect themselves from heavy and unbearable losses.
The
organizations can secure their sensitive & precious information through the
AES 256-bit encryption of LTO4 tape version. Unauthorized access and misuse of
user information are prevented by the HP 1840 drive. The encryption technique
assures easy-to-enable protection and security of information. The HP LTO-4
tape’s encryption technique compresses the data efficiently and maximizes the
capacity. The data is encrypted in a cost efficient manner without effecting
the LTO4 1840 tape drive’s performance and accuracy. 240 MB/sec is the transfer
speed offered by HP LTO4 tape drive. HP has included another unique feature in
the LTO 4 tape drive called the “data rate matching”. This is a unique
mechanism that delivers fastest tape performance as it adjusts the drive’s
speed according to the transfer rate of host thus ensuring continuous streaming
of tape drive. The output level and performance of Hewlett-Packard 1840 tape
drive is unparalleled. It is very user friendly and is also backward
compatible. So the companies are more confident as their investment is safe and
protected by the backward compatibility of LTO 4 ultrium storage format.
