A mainstay of stages around the world, 'Grease' is coming to the end of its current run at the Piccadilly Theatre. Widely regarded at the world’s number one musical, the current production has been enjoyed by critics and fans alike. With Danny Bayne and Susan McFadden taking on the roles of Danny and Sandy respectively, after winning the BBC show 'You’re the One that I Want', you won’t be able to get enough of the youthful enthusiasm which these two new stars display in every performance. Bolstered by the hit songs of the original production and movie, this is the London rock ‘n roll party of the year.
Another musical set to end its current run after almost 20 years of treading the West End boards is 'Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story'. A long time favourite with musical theatre aficionados, Buddy is once again directed by Rob Bettinson who has been at the helm of the production since its original run in London in 1989. One of the first so-called “jukebox musicals”, the show consists mostly of the timeless songs of Holly and other early rockers, leading the audience on a fun filled trip down memory lane and introducing the classic song-writing of Holly and others to a whole new audience.
Summer could also be the last chance many people have to see 'Chicago', the hit musical that currently holds the record for longest running Broadway musical in history. Since opening in the West End in 1997, Chicago has been seen by thousands of theatre-goers in the capital, with stars such as Ashley Simpson, Melanie Griffith and Denise Van Outen all appearing in the lead role of Roxie Hart throughout its long run.
Public demand for performances of 'Chicago' reached fever pitch in 2002, following the release of the Academy Award winning film version. However, with nearby West End London hotels consistently packed with theatregoers eager to catch a performance of this classic musical, you’d better snap up tickets while you still can before the end of the run.
Although you may already be a veteran of theatre shows in other cities, catching a West End show should be at the top of anyone visiting London’s 'Things to Do' list as the atmosphere is unique and unlike anything experienced elsewhere. And, with many great shows coming to the end of their run (including many other Broadway imports, new musicals and short run revivals), theatre enthusiasts should make their best effort to catch their favourite musicals and plays before it’s too late!
